Calculating Stacked or Multiple Discounts
When more than one discount applies
Stores often apply more than one discount — a storewide sale plus a coupon, for example. Discounts stack multiplicatively, not by simply adding the percentages together. To calculate a stacked discount, run this calculator once with the original price and the first discount, then run it again using the resulting sale price as the new "original price" with the second discount applied. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount is not the same as a single 30% discount — it works out to about 28% off overall.

Finding the Original Price From a Sale Price
Sometimes you know the sale price and the discount percentage but want to work backward to find the original price. The formula is: original price = sale price ÷ (1 − discount% / 100). For example, if an item costs $75 after a 25% discount, the original price was $75 ÷ 0.75 = $100. This calculator is built for the forward direction (original price → sale price), but the reverse formula above lets you solve it by hand in seconds when needed.
